Tanker truck crash causes lane closures on Route 50

PARKERSBURG, West Virginia (WTAP) – Multiple crews responded to a crash involving three vehicles Tuesday night.

On September 3, crews responded to a report of a crash involving a tanker truck containing a fuel mixture, two passenger vehicles and a semi-truck at the intersection of I-77 and US-50 at approximately 6:36 p.m.

According to the Wood County Sheriff’s Office, all lanes in both directions on US-50 were closed and traffic was rerouted via I-77 north and south. Pifer’s Towing responded to provide hazardous material cleanup and removal of wrecked vehicles.

The crash investigation revealed that the tanker truck was in the left turn lane from US-50 eastbound onto I-77 northbound. One passenger vehicle was traveling eastbound on US-50 and the second passenger vehicle had just entered US-50 eastbound from I-77 northbound. According to the report, a collision occurred between the two passenger vehicles, with one of the passenger vehicles striking the tanker truck.

As a result of the tanker collision, a significant amount of fuel leaked onto the road.

Currently, all westbound lanes have reopened and one eastbound lane on US-50 remains open.
