Chelsea 1-1 Crystal Palace, Player Ratings: Frustratingly mediocre

1. COLE PALMER (6.6)

Ninety minutes to prove that games are won and lost (and drawn) on the pitch, on paper and in theory and not in formulas. All the relevant metrics were very much in Chelsea’s favour, except of course the final scoreline.

Unsurprisingly, the only goal we managed to score was set up by Cole Palmer (and Noni Madueke) who executed a wonderfully fluid counter-attack. That’s four goal assists for our reigning Player of the Year this season! Not bad at all.

Palmer was a disappointing display for much of the second half, and he wasn’t alone in that. But hopefully we won’t have to suffer through too many of these games and can translate theoretical, mathematical and statistical dominance into real wins on a much more regular basis.

2. NICOLAS JACKSON (6.3)

One way to turn that into a win would have been to take our chances. Jackson scored a goal he couldn’t miss, and then he scored another one he couldn’t miss toward the end. Sometimes that’s what happens.

“It was a great chance to win the match. It was the last minute, I was a bit tired but I ran and hopefully I can score a goal like that next time.”

3. LEVI COLWILL (6.2)

Colwill has had a quiet, steady and consistent solid start to the season and is starting to form a good partnership with Wesley Fofana, who is not far behind. We are still scoring goals at a troubling rate, but if we can get that going we could have a solid foundation here.
