Morgantown wins Brooke Invitational | News, Sports, Jobs


WELLSBURG — Morgantown won the Brooke Invitational high school golf tournament Wednesday at Highland Springs Golf Course. The Mohigans shot a four-player total of 304, 16 shots better than second-place Linsly (320), which trailed third-place University (321).

The Cadets’ Adam Gill continued his good season with a medal-winning 72. Morgantown’s Andrew Sheets was second with a 73. Wheeling Central’s Luke Tiu shot a 76, and the only other players under 80 were the Mohigans trio of Solas Chhin-Kreiner, Ahyden Shepard and Angela Yao, who all shot 77s.

Other players who scored for Linsly were Vinny Demarchi (82), Landen Cook (83) and Carson Gessler (83).

Wheeling Central’s Broen Parker (81), Jake Brown (85) and Gary Hatfield (88) supported Tiu as the Maroon Knights finished fourth with 330 points.

Brooke, who finished fifth with a 350, was ahead of Parker McMahon with a time of 85. Aiden Ferguson from Weir threw an 88 and Brandt Blake from John Marshall threw an 82.

Buckeye 174, Shady Edge 196

RAYLAND — Kaleb Stang and Dom Kempton each shot 41 as the Panthers beat the Tigers at Bec-Wood Hills Golf Course. The Tigers’ Brennan O’Grady also shot 41.

GIRLS GOLF

Knights, Demons at a Stalemate

WHEELING — Wheeling Central and St. Clairsville were tied after nine holes at Crispin Golf Club. Both teams shot 139. Edison beat Martins Ferry 143-144 for third place.

The Red Devils’ Olivia Baker took the medal with a score of 38, one shot ahead of the Maroon Knights’ Maddie Potts.

Kallie McKeegan led the Wildcats with 40 points, while Julia Hancock led the Purple Riders with 42 points.

Magnolia beat Valley 25-9, 25-3, 25-17

NEW MARTINSVILLE — The Blue Eagles left no doubt with a crushing win over the Lumberjills on Tuesday.

Jessa Anderson led Magnolia with 17 aces, 12 kills and 12 digs. Sidney Knight had 30 assists. Karli Warder and Kiera Dowler each had seven kills.
