Netflix’s new mystery thriller looks set to hit number 1 for the foreseeable future, with critics calling it ‘ridiculously good’

It’s been a while since a new Netflix series has really gained traction and the kind of subscriber interest that had everyone talking about “Fool Me Once” and “Baby Reindeer” earlier this year, but “The Perfect Couple” looks set to be the streamer’s next big hit.

This new mystery thriller miniseries has all the ingredients needed for a series to make a splash at the box office. streaming serviceand even at this early stage, it looks like a very good bet to take over the No. 1 spot on Netflix’s top 10 list. Not only does it have proven star power thanks to Nicole Kidman, but it’s also based on a bestselling novel and has been labeled a perfect binge-watch by critics.

“The Perfect Couple” began streaming on Netflix today (Thursday, September 5), so it’s a little too fresh to give the full picture, but with early reviews promising and plenty in its favor, it seems hard for this six-episode murder-mystery series to fail to impress.

Adapted from Elin Hilderbrand’s 2018 novel of the same name, “The Perfect Couple” isn’t trying to reinvent the murder mystery genre and is clearly tipping its hat to genre giants like Agatha Christie. While it may not have the most original premise for a thriller, sometimes the simplest concepts are the best, and the setup for “The Perfect Couple” is seriously intriguing.

Set on picturesque Nantucket during the summer wedding season, the lavish nuptials between Amelia Sacks (Eve Hewson) and Benji Winbury (Billy Howle) are sure to be an event to remember. No expense was spared for the beachside event, despite the disapproval of the groom’s mother, Greer Garrison Winbury (Nicole Kidman), and father, Tag Winbury (Liev Schreiber).

However, the exuberant party atmosphere is punctured when a body is discovered just hours before the ceremony and the entire wedding party becomes suspects. Soon a detective (Donna Lynne Champlin) is dispatched to the scene and interviews with the family soon reveal dark secrets and prove that no couple is truly perfect, despite what appearances might suggest.

This new Netflix series also stars Dakota Fanning, Meghann Fahy, Ishaan Khattar, Jack Reynor, Sam Nivola and Mia Isaac, and is produced by Jenna Lamia.

As mentioned, “The Perfect Couple” has only been out on Netflix for a few hours at the time of writing, so we’re waiting on initial reactions from subscribers, but a few lucky critics have gotten the chance to watch the series ahead of its public release, and early reviews are quite promising.

Lucy Mangan Protector He called it “ridiculously good” and said, “It’s nearly impossible to resist watching the entirety of this stylish detective drama.” Financial Times He called it “a delightful late-summer read” but was more critical, arguing that “the plot is simple, the characters stilted and the satire unsubtle”.

Nicole Kidman’s leading role as the ruthless matriarch of the Winbury family has previously received much praise. Entertainment Weekly‘s Kristen Baldwin said, “It’s so much fun to watch (Kidman) embrace Greer’s underlying nastiness,” while Tania Hussain added Collider “Kidman continues to demonstrate her versatility and emotional depth through her signature blend of silence, stillness and modest gestures,” he says.

However, Nick Hilton Independent were less impressed. In a two-star review, they labeled the series “Netflix pulp by the numbers” and criticized it for its “lack of originality” and its poor imitation of HBO’s “Big Little Lies” (which also featured Kidman).

Should you watch ‘The Perfect Couple’ on Netflix?

I’ve made no secret of my general disappointment with Netflix’s originals in 2024; while there have been a few spikes (“Hit Man,” “Baby Reindeer”), the dips have been particularly bad, and it’s been far too long since subscribers have had a truly compelling series.

Luckily, “The Perfect Couple” may be just what I’m looking for. While it doesn’t look like anything particularly original for the mystery thriller genre, with just six episodes it makes for a great weekend watch and I suspect it will quickly climb the Netflix charts as subscribers start watching this new series.
