Oxford returns to school after historic floods

OXFORD, CT (WFSB) – The school district in Oxford is preparing for the first day of classes, more than a week later than planned.

The students were due to return on August 28, but their return was postponed. Historic floods cause major damage to town.

As a result of the flood disaster between August 18-19, 12 roads and 6 bridges were damaged.

On August 30, Engineers have determined that the roads are safe enough to drive on.

As a result, the school district has created nine bus stops across Oxford over the next two weeks to ensure students get to school safely.

Officials asked families which stops made the most sense for them and provided a list, which would be used for at least two weeks.

The district said it recognizes that neighborhood bus stops may only be realistic for some.

“The added complication is that more than 170 students are living on completely closed roads,” principal Robert Miller wrote in a letter to parents.

Distance learning option was also offered for families who could not make it to the bus stops.

Each day students are absent must be made up in June.
