80 Million RedCap IoT Modules Shipments Predicted by 2029, 71% of Which Will Be eRedCap – Australian Associated Press

LONDON, September 5, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — 5G RedCap was finalized in Release 17 of 3GPP to provide device OEMs with a migration path from 4G LTE to 5G for mid-range devices that sit between enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) and Low Power Wide Area (LPWA). This makes 5G RedCap particularly attractive for IoT. ABI Research, a global technology intelligence firm, predicts that IoT RedCap module shipments will reach 80 million from 2024 to 2029.

“5G RedCap is a set of network and device optimizations that reduce device complexity and act as a natural successor to LTE Cat-4 and LTE Cat-6. It is a way to provide an affordable path to 5G for IoT device OEMs that do not need the full spectrum of 5G capabilities,” he explains. Jonathan BuddIndustry Analyst at ABI Research. “Mid-tier LTE Categories have proven valuable in connecting IoT devices; RedCap offers throughput performance equivalent to LTE with assurance of network lifetime in the 5G era. Not surprisingly, 5G RedCap is gaining significant traction across the IoT value chain and Qualcomm, MediaTech, UNISOCAnd ASR Microelectronics “We will be quick to enter the chipset market.”

The second iteration of the RedCap standard will enhance RedCap (eRedCap), further reducing device complexity to unlock another significant addressable market for IoT device OEMs currently using or planning to use LTE-Cat-1 and Cat-1bis. These LTE categories serve a significant pool of IoT applications that represent a larger market opportunity than 5G RedCap. From 2024 to 2029, 56 million modules, or 71% of all RedCap modules, will be eRedCap and 23 million, or 29% of RedCap modules, will be for 5G RedCap (R17).

Sequences It has already announced its intention to develop the eRedCap chip, and we can expect more silicon vendors to follow suit in a hyper-competitive space. “As a replacement for LTE Cat-1 and Cat-1bis, eRedCap will be widely applicable to connect devices across the IoT application landscape, and chipset and module manufacturers will be looking to gain customer loyalty as early as possible,” Budd concludes.

These findings come from ABI Research 5G RedCap Standards and Chipsets for IoT application analysis report and Devices report.
