GMG falls in Colfax-Mingo championship game | News, Sports, Jobs


COLFAX — The GMG and East Marshall volleyball teams competed in the Colfax-Mingo Tournament on Saturday, Aug. 31, with GMG falling to Coon-Rapids Bayard in the championship game.

GMG (5-1) finished the day 4-1 with straight-set victories over Nodaway Valley (21-8, 21-16), East Marshall (21-17, 21-11), Iowa Valley (21-11, 21-19) and Colfax-Mingo (21-16, 21-14) en route to the finals. Coon Rapids-Bayard (7-0) defeated the Wolverines in three sets, 22-20, 11-21, 15-12.

East Marshall (3-3) finished 2-2 on the day with wins over Nodaway Valley (21-6, 21-17) and Baxter (15-21, 21-16, 15-10) and losses to GMG and Iowa Valley (21-11, 21-12).

In the championship match, GMG was led by Olivia Maddux with nine kills. Rhianna Murty and Arianna Pierce each had four kills and Brielle Sheets added three more. Hadlee Hempy finished with 15 assists.

Landry August led the Wolverines with six digs and Murty had the team’s only block. August served 11 for 11, while Hempy served 10 for 11 with two aces.

In East Marshall’s three-set win over Baxter, Vaeda Bryan led the Mustangs with seven kills. Mya Gould had 10 assists and Mylie Rasmusson recorded a block. Bailey Grant led with 10 digs and Bryan had eight more. Grant served 11-of-11 with two aces and Cora Talbert went 7-of-8 with two aces.
